Rottweilers are among the most highly prized dogs for herding cattle, sheep and other animals and are also popular for their guard dog abilities and for use in helping disabled people with their everyday lives. Rottweilers have also been trained to assist in the apprehension of lawbreakers and fugitives and, under most conditions, makes a great pet.
The Rottweiler species dates back to A.D. 74, when the Romans overtook and conquered a small farming community in what is now Germany. The town, Rottweil, had several large mastiffs which were used to help manage livestock. The roman army also brought in their dogs which they also used to keep their livestock from straying. These Roman dogs herded the cattle which the armies took along on their quests for land and riches. These cattle fed the soldiers and supplied other items such as milk and leather for making sandals and other clothing items.
Inevitably, these two separate breeds intermingled....resulting in a strong, better looking, and much quicker dog. Both the Roman soldiers and the townspeople saw the added benefits of this more attractive, powerful dog.
After the Roman army left, several Romans remained in the town of Rottweil, overseeing the breeding of this "new type" of dog. This breed, the Rottweiler, became a favorite of shepherds, farmers, and people who just wanted a nice looking dog who could offer them companionship and help in protecting themselves and their families.
